Skills Shortages*
The Government maintains a National Shortage Occupation
List that details the professions in which there is a shortage of workers in
the UK. If a job appears on this list, employers can recruit skilled workers
from outside the European Union, without having to fulfil the “resident labour
market test” by advertising the position in the UK.
Below are some of the occupations that appeared on this
shortage list in June 2009. Please follow the links below to see a complete
list as of December 2009.
Audiological scientist – geologist – contaminated land
engineer – geoenvironmentalist – civil engineer – intensive care doctor –
paediatrician – orthodontist – clinical psychologist – pharmacist – veterinary surgeon
– secondary education teacher of maths or science – quantity surveyor – social worker
– ship & hovercraft officer – skilled ballet dancer – high integrity pipe
welder – skilled chef – skilled sheep shearer.
